Reasons to Consider Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem cell therapy is the use of stem cells to treat disease by replacing damaged or diseased cells or repairing tissues. The most common and best-known stem cell therapy is transplanting stem cells to treat a variety of blood diseases, including leukemia and anemia.
What are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are unspecialized cells that can reproduce via cell division. They are undifferentiated and have the potential to develop into different types of cells, like blood cells, muscle cells, nerve cells, etc. Stem cells occur naturally in some organs or tissues, where they develop to replace old and dying cells.
Embryonic stem cells are taken from human embryos called blastocysts that are three to five days old. The inner cells of the blastocyst will eventually form all of the types of cells found in the human body.
Adult or somatic stem cells are found among the specialized cells of a tissue or organ. Unlike embryonic stem cells that can become virtually any type of cell, somatic stem cells can only differentiate into the types of cells found within its home tissue or organ. Adult stem cells found in the brain, for example, can only become one of the three types of cells found within the brain: neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes.
Induced pluripotent stem cells are specialized adult cells that have been artificially manipulated by scientists to regress to the undifferentiated state of a stem cell. They are the newest type of stem cell.
What Kind of Diseases Can Stem Cell Therapy Treat?
Stem cells have long been used to treat disorders of the blood and immune system. Stem cells have been used since the 1970s to grow skin grafts for burn patients.
In Europe, a new stem cell treatment called Holocar has been developed and conditionally approved. It is used to repair the cornea of patients who have suffered chemical burns. Stem cell treatment has also been shown to help organ transplant patients and people with autoimmune diseases.
